This just in: Michael Stipe doesn’t like the Republican Party.
Man, this on the heals of “Living Well is the Best Revenge…”
I’m afraid subtlety is out the window on this record. Buck is playing thick, distorted chords a la Monster. This doesn’t seem as much a return to the IRS days — as was said elsewhere — as it does Monster. Apparently Peter Buck only has one distortion pedal and he’s not afraid to use it.

This one has grown on me a little the second time around, although I’m not crazy about Michael throwing out “dancefloor” lyrics.
It doesn’t feel quite as serious on the second listen, though. This one is fine.
the dancefloor lyrics are sarcastic. they’re not meant to be taken seriously. there’s a lot going on here lyrically and it’s not all spelled out for you.
Well Mike, my only defense here is that this was written as I was listening to the record the first time through. These were first impressions. This song has grown on me some since that initial listen.
