So Much Music, So Little Time: Mudcrutch

We take a break from the Bruce Springsteen Fanboy love fest to talk about ::gasp:: other music.

Man, I have so much to talk about and so much to do and there just aren’t enough hours to get to it all. I’m finally making time to listen to Mudcrutch’s debut record. Mudcrutch is the embryonic incarnation of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. It features Petty (vocals, bass), Benmont Tench (keyboard) and Mike Campbell (guitar). These three future Heartbreakers have re-teamed with drummer Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon (guitar, vocals) and finished a record 35 years in the making. I’ve been wanting to dive into this record since I got it last week (it showed up a couple hours after I left for Atlanta, naturally) but I also wanted to wait until I could give it the attention it deserves rather than relegating it to background music.

So far, I like it. It’s not a Heartbreaker record under an “old” new name. Petty’s voice is unmistakable and if you delve no further than that, you may not hear much of a difference because it’s not as though they’ve gone goth, punk, or emo. That said, there are real sonic and musical differences between Mudcrutch and The Heartbreakers. I’m only five songs in, so I’ll wait before I say more.
