Mudcrutch “Monday”

It’s a Mudcrutch Monday here at Confessions of a Fanboy.

What’s that? It’s not Monday? Oh, right then. My mistake. Holiday weekends always do that to me. It’s amazing how quickly a Tuesday can become a Monday. So much for fuckin’ alliteration. I liked Mudcrutch Monday. It had a ring to it. I guess I could call it a Tom Petty Tuesday, but it’s cheating and it doesn’t have quite the same ring. Everyone’s a critic.

Good friend of the site El Bicho just finished a review of the Mudcrutch CD and he liked it about as much as I did, which is to say a lot. You should check out what he had to say about it (and you can always re-read my review).

My song for the moment is “Scare Easy.” This one feels like a thematic companion or sequel to “I Won’t Back Down” from Full Moon Fever. “Scare Easy” doesn’t have the dramatic opening verse that “I Won’t Back Down” has, but the resoluteness of the song’s protagonist is as unmistakable. The guy may be a loser, but he’s a loser at the top of his game.

Mike Campbell (joined by Tom Leadon on co-lead guitar duties) doesn’t lay down as memorable a slide lick on “Scare Easy” as he did on “I Won’t Back Down,” but still puts a stamp on the song. Benmont Tench switches between piano and organ throughout the song. The piano is hidden in the mix, bolstering the rhythm. When he turns to his organ, he gives the song a psychedelic vibe.

“Scare Easy” is classic Tom Petty and is another Tom Petty classic.
