eBay, Save Me From Myself!

The Hell’s Angels have this saying that three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead. So, why am I about to share a secret on the internet? Because I’m a Fanboy and I have to write about something, and TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried has largely accepted the depths of my stupidity and musical devotion.

I complained this past weekend about having missed the opportunity to buy the deluxe edition of Radiohead’s In Rainbows. The more I got to thinking about that, the angrier I got. The angrier I got, the more obsessed I became about having it.

What can a poor Fanboy do when a limited edition box set is no longer being sold? That’s right. eBay. Motherfuckers of the world! I don’t know what I want more right now: the fucking deluxe box set or to be outbid so I don’t actually spend what I’ve bid to spend on the fucking thing.

I’m a sick, sick man… and I really want that Radiohead box!

  1. Update: I totally got outbid.

    Bastards.

  2. Have you heard the contents of the other disc? I deem them not all that worthy. I think the last time I listened was some time back in December. I’ll have to listen again and see if I feel differently, but I really thought those tracks were seriously lackluster - two are just short, non-descript instrumentals, so there’s even less incentive.

But, if you want the packaging and everything, I understand. There was absolutely no need for me to get the deluxe Ghosts, but I sure do like coming home and seeing it sitting on top of all my CDs. Personally, I just don’t find the In Rainbows packaging to be all that special for the exorbitant price they were charging, unfortunately. It was really just a big version of the retail CD package, minus the goofy stickers.

  3. Tom, I agree and disagree on this. Yes, the packaging was well produced but nothing that was mindblowing. I too bought it, and outside of flipping through it a couple times, put it away on the shelf.

But while MK1 and MK2 were interludes, I felt the rest of the songs on that second disc were very strong as far as Radiohead EPs go (which, really is what it was).

Maybe you were putting too much on it, because of the price tag, for it to be a limited edition OK Computer and it let you down. I say, give it another listen without any expectations…

As for you, Josh… the Holy Grail was not meant to be brought past the Great Seal. Let it go, Indiana. Let it go.

  4. My desire to own the set has a lot to do with being a collector and a completist. I long ago gave up on truly being able to assemble and cobble together all of Radiohead’s import singles and b-sides. It’s too damn hard and too damn expensive do that stateside. I’ve tried though. I want the box because… I want the box. I’m a Radiohead fan and this is what I do. I can’t let it go.

I’ve heard mix reviews on the second disc. I’m guessing there will be a few tunes from it I’ll like, a few that won’t do much for me. I’ve got someone sending me a copy of the disc so I’ll at least get to hear it. Regardless, I’m going to want that box and one day I shall have it.

It belongs in a museum, Sahm. The Fanboy Museum.

  5. I just checked prices on some completed auctions and now I wish I’d bought a couple of those Discboxes. Holy . . . wow. $175!? Alas I just have mediocre mp3s of the second disc. It’s all about priorities, I guess. Me, I just paid, not 20 minutes ago, $40 for three sets of FLAC files of official live material from a King Crimson off-shoot, all from within about 10 days of each other. Totally worth it to me.
