The Gift That Keeps on Giving: Cat Power - The Greatest

It’s like a second Christmas morning! I got four CDs from Amazon yesterday and due to the comings and goings of the day, I didn’t get a chance to listen to all of them. In fact, I really only got to listen to the first disc of the Mudhoney Superfuzz Bigmuff re-issue. The good news is that gave me something to look forward to today. New music!

I decided to start the morning with Cat Power’s The Greatest. As you’ll remember, I became particularly enamored of her after listening to her contribution to the I’m Not There soundtrack and Sir Donald of Gibson recommended TG as a good place to start. Maybe you just have to be in the right mood for these things. It’s not that I think the CD is terrible or anything. It’s just not hitting me right now. I could be that I’m still trying to dust myself off from last night (a long story that will never again be told) but it’s just not getting it done for me. The production seems a little lo-fi for such lovely songs, but more than that the music is just a little sleepier than I am right now. I thought it would be a good match for my state of mind. Maybe not. I’m coming back to this one. This shan’t be my final word on the subject.
