Today’s Temporary Obsession: Radiohead - In Rainbows
Yesterday’s R.E.M. obsession was briefly supplanted by an afternoon with The Byrds. It’s been totally obliterated today by a Radiohead obsession. How do I know? I have the same rash I did in college. The most commonly heard phrase of every recent college graduate: “I went through a Radiohead phase in college.” I was primed for it though, really. I was in college when OK Computer was all the rage.
One of the side effects of the Radiohead Obsession Rash is a desire to empty one’s bank account for every microscopic piece of music one might have missed along the way. For example: I bought the download of In Rainbows and also bought the physical CD. What I didn’t buy was the mega discbox. You know, the one that came with the album, a bonus CD, and two vinyl LPs. It was expensive and at the time I was flat broke. Now the damn thing is sold out and eBay appears to be my only alternative. I may not be able to sleep in my own bed if I pay the eBay price for one of those sets. Fuck me.
Anyway, I’ve started listening to In Rainbows this morning. Radiohead on a humid Sunday morning in Alabama. What does it all mean? What does it all mean? Sorry… I’m at work again today and it’s doing strange things to my headspace. I’ve lost track of the days of the week. I had to look it up to confirm it is actually Sunday. Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing here? Yes! This is exactly the shape one should be in when listening to Radiohead. You see? The rash, the delirium, it all makes sense! Ha!
