Waking Up: Dan Wilson - “Honey Please”

I have a good feeling about this one… today, I mean. Yesterday was a shithole of a day. I’ve had worse, but yesterday just sucked out loud. I can count on one hand the number of good things that happened. By virtue of today not being yesterday, I’d have felt good about today. But…

I woke up with Dan Wilson’s “Honey Please” in my head. What a beautiful song. What an incredible vocal. It’s perfectly recorded and mixed, it’s perfectly performed. I love it. The funny thing is, I would likely forget to name this song as one of the reasons I like the Free Life record so much yet this morning, I’ve listened to it twice already.

This is a classic pop song. It sounds, to me, like a slightly stripped down Bacharach song. There’s not a string and horn section, but the arrangement has a symphonic waltz quality. It sounds smart. Dan’s piano sounds slightly washed out, giving it an aged sound. It sounds like a yellowed, vintage photograph. I became a sucker for the vibraphone — vibes — in college because of two records: Radiohead’s OK Computer (”No Surprises) and Mark Lanegan’s I’ll Take Care Of You (Barrett Martin provided vibes on the title track). They’re used well on “Honey Please.”

Yes, I think today is going to be better. I have a feeling about these things.
