Watermelon Slim Back With 3rd Album in 3 Years, No Paid Vacations

I don’t know how he does it. It doesn’t seem possible. It shouldn’t be possible, yet he continues to do it.

Watermelon Slim is back with his third album in three years. Backed by his band The Workers, Slim will release No Paid Vacations tomorrow through the Northern Blues label.

Three albums in three years, and it’s not like the man doesn’t get out their and tour behind each record. Three albums in three years, and it’s not like he’s putting out filler. Each of the last two records has been nominated for 6 Blues Music Awards a piece and last year’s The Wheel Man took home Album of the Year.

Sonically, No Paid Vacations picks up where he left off with these last two albums and the quality is on par with those records as well. I’ve only gotten to listen to it once so far and I am going to do something about that this afternoon.

  1. I think you’re going to find it gets better with each listen. Better and betterer..er…er.

  2. I think you’re right. The second time through has already helped it grow on me even more.

I need to go back and listen to it a third time but Amazon just brought my copy of Johnny Young’s The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions and I can’t stop listening to it. This would be the fault of Mr. Gerry Hundt, who did a cover of “Money Takin’ Woman” in Huntsville. Mandolin blues makes me happy, and according to my ears and/or research he was one of the best of blending that instrument with Chicago blues. Love it, love it, love it.

  3. Whatever happened to self-discipline? You know, that little voice in your head saying, “I need to listen to this for a review” or is it screaming at you yet?

No matter. It’s the blues and that’s a good thing. I know I’ve told you this before, but mandolin is my favorite instrument. Ever.

  4. How long have we been talking? Have I ever given you the slightest indication I possess self-discipline? If I have, I apologize for misleading you because nothing could be further from the truth. :D

I’m listening to Slim now, but I did love that Johnny Young last night. Fantastic stuff.

  5. i thought you conservative types were full of self-discipline.

    man, life is confusing sometimes.

    ;-)

  6. People are people, Sir Saleski, or haven’t you heard that song?

  7. or haven’t you heard that song?

yeah, but i don’t really like early Depeche Mode…i’m more of a Black Celebration or Music For The Masses kind of guy.

  8. Depeche Mode, pshaw. Let’s go back to Slim! More fun there anyway.

Josh, time to get the wife some leather and let her whip you into shape.
