Springsteen To Release Digital Live EP to Benefit Danny Federici Melanoma Fund

I got an e-mail reminding me of something that happened while I was in South Carolina that I hadn’t yet written about here on the site. Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band are releasing a digital EP of tour highlights from the current run in support of the platinum-selling Magic.

The 4-song EP will be available as a download only and will be comprised of four audio tracks with four accompanying videos, available from all digital musical outlets including Apple’s iTunes Music Store. The audio was mixed by Bob Clearmountain and mastered by veteran Bob Ludwig.

The tracklisting for the digital EP is as follows:

1. “Always A Friend” (performed with Alejandro Escovedo)
Recording Date: 04/14/2008 (Houston, Texas)
2. “The Ghost of Tom Joad” (performed with Tom Morello)
Recording Date: 04/07/2008 (Anaheim, California)
3. “Turn Turn Turn” (performed with Roger McGuinn)
Recording Date: 04/23/2008 (Orlando, Florida)
4. “4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)” (Danny Federici’s final performance
with the E Street Band)
Recording Date: 03/20/2008 (Indianapolis, Indiana)

Proceeds from the album will benefit the Danny Federici Melanoma Fund. Federici,a founding member of the E Street Band, lost his battle with melanoma earlier this year. The artists, songwriters, and music publishers are waiving all of their royalties, and Columbia Records is donating all of its net profits. iTMS has agreed to donate the profits from first-year sales as well.

I’m not at all surprised that a performance featuring Danny is included, but I was a bit stunned to see his final performance of “Sandy,” a song on which he shined night after night after night, is the song that was chosen. Just the thought of that is nearly enough to choke me up. I can’t imagine what it was like for the band to listen to that performance prior to authorizing its inclusion in this digital EP. I just can’t imagine.

  1. really great that that’s where the money is going. i’m going to buy/download the hell out of this thing.

  2. Absolutely. I would have downloaded it regardless, but the fact it’s going to charity makes it that much more worthwhile.

  3. I’m totally going to purchase this when it’s released, and while I obviously understand why “Sandy” is included here, I’m not altogether understanding the other selections being deemed “highlights” of the tour.

I was at the Orlando show and many people were irked that Roger McGuinn essentially took up two encore slots with Byrds songs, especially in light of the fact that this was only the night after Tampa (when the band returned to the tour).

“Backstreets” from Tampa (the first song of that incredible night) is a tour highlight. Something from that Red Bank show (when Darkness/Born To Run were played in their entirety) is a highlight. Except for “Sandy,” this could’ve been called Duets.

  4. I found the song choices a little curious myself. I think the “duets” thing is kind of cool- especially the Morello/Tom Joad pairing.

I think the oddity of it all is the reason for the release. It’s going to be a digital only, charity release. The real tour document is still to come.

Also worth considering: if Clearmountain and Ludwig are already processing sound… could we be close to getting said document soon?

  5. in the case of Escovedo, he’s been a good friend of Bruce for a while now and Bruce has been touting his music (with good reason)

  6. “I’m not altogether understanding the other selections being deemed “highlights” of the tour.”

Then you obviously have not seen the youtube video of Morello, although I thought the 8th was better.

It’s likely Bruce wants to maximize the audience by including the fans of other artists to the pool. And boo hoo to the fools irked about McGuinn since Bruce obviously asked him to take part. If they don’t realize how special witnessing the rarity of the E Street band covering the Byrds is, they don’t know music.

Trekkies think these Bossholes need to get a life.
