New Music Tuesday: Bruce Springsteen Charity EP Magic Tour Highlights

“It’s a town full of losers, we’re pulling out of here to win.”

The gospel of Springsteen is filled with lovers and friends who at any given moment are on the way up or down, walking the tightrope between winning and losing. The Springsteen universe is a place where a man’s fortune can change in the blink of an eye.

“Nobody wins unless everybody wins.”

Today is one of those days with a little something for everyone. It’s one of those moments where there are no losers, only winners.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band have released a digital live EP of highlights from the ongoing Magic tour, and nearly all the proceeds are going to charity. Artists, songwriters, and publishers are waiving their royalties and to pass the money on to the Danny Federici Melanoma Fund. Columbia Records is donating their net profits to the fund. The iTunes Music Store is donating their first year net profits, as well.

It’s good to do things to help other people even when there is nothing tangible in it for us, but helping somebody out and getting something in return isn’t so bad, either.

The fund, of course, is named for E Street Band founding member Dan Federici, who lost his battle with melanoma skin cancer earlier this year. Among the highlights included in this digital EP is Danny’s final performance of “Sandy,” a song that through the years he featured prominently with his lovely accordion work. The other three songs included in this package feature Springsteen dueting with Alejandro Escovedo, Tom Morello, and Roger McGuinn (full tracklistingiTunes purchasers can get audio and video, which is the option I chose this morning.

Do something for someone else. No one will look down on you for enjoying the digital gift you get in return, and we’ll all avert our eyes when you listen to or watch “Sandy.” We understand.
