I’ve Only Scratched The Surface of Buddy Guy’s Skin Deep
Where to begin, where to begin? I made the trek to Satan Best Buy and bought my copy of Buddy Guy’s Skin Deep. As much as I loathe that place I have to give them credit for this: they
‘re treating Buddy’s new album like a major release. They got a few copies of it in stock and they’ve marked it down to $9.99, consistent with their price point on other major releases. It’s nice to see.
I’ve now listened through Skin Deep from beginning to end and I like it, which does and doesn’t surprise me. On the one hand, it’s Buddy Guy! What’s not to like? On the other, I’ve had some minor quibbles with the sound and concept of some of Buddy’s most recent records. While those quibbles remain, the ferocity of Guy’s signature guitar work overpowers them.
Joining Eric Clapton and Robert Randolph as previous guests are the husband-wife team of Derek Trucks (Allman Brothers Band) and Susan Tedeschi. Child prodigy Quinn Sullivan also guests, appearing on “Who’s Gonna Fill Those Shoes?”
I’m listening through it a second time now, and should be getting a feature-length review online soon.
