Russia To Ban Emo?
Russia has the right idea but the wrong rationale. The Russian legislature is considering a bill that would crack down on emo web sites and ban emo/goth dress in schools and government buildings. The purported reason behind the restrictions is the belief of a link between emo/goth youth and suicide and depression.
Suicide and depression aren’t in the same time zone as the best reasons to bust up the emo scene! Have you people actually heard this music? My Chemical Romance does what more than a century of Christian fundamentalists could not: MCR prove Darwin was wrong! MCR makes me think the First Amendment was a bad idea!
Who would have thought freedom of expression would be such a bad idea? Go listen to a Staind record and telol me you don’t want to move to Moscow! Fall Out Boy bared their soul and it was stupid. I hear Leningrad is nice this time of year. April Long wrote a review of a Staind album for NME and it’s one of my favorite paragraphs ever:
Staind are the prime purveyors of a spooky American sub-genre characterised by therapy-escapees with growly Vedder-voices (see Creed, etc), who seem to think that the world should share their pain. So they inflict their painfully unimaginative angst-rock records on us, like revenge for not being friends with them in high school or something. It’s a cruel and unpleasant trend, and it’s got to stop.
Amen.

love My Chemical Romance (especially The Black Parade….”Teenagers” is a great song).
can’t stand Staind.
Speaking of emo, and this may get me banned from the grounds of CoaF, a coworker lent me Panic At The Disco’s latest, Pretty. Odd. and I was completely shocked at how good it was - very Beatles-esque, and entirely enjoyable. Nothing particularly emo about it despite the leanings of their first album. I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking or anything, but it was definitely a fun listen - and it was kind of nice to be surprised like that by something I would have never imagined listening to before.
And I hope this ban in Russia doesn’t include the first Sunny Day Real Estate album (Diary - the one many say started emo) - that thing is a classic. Killer album, but I’d hardly say it actually sounds like emo now.
“Emo” is a funny thing, since there appears to be so many bands that are “emo” and sound nothing like each other.
Banning… you know, this idea has potential. I can ban people! Why didn’t I think about this before! My traffic now routinely hits triple digits for the week. I can do without one or two of you people.
This might be the greatest day of my life!
before i’m permanently banned, i would like to point out Staind does not sound all that different than Alice In Chains, at least on some songs.
I’m guessing the Russian government isn’t too familiar with the music of Leonard Cohen. He pretty much secured a patent on “suicide and depression” songs long before Emo came along.
And Cohen is actually good at what he does.
“Sounding different” and “being different” are two very different things. Staind may emulate Alice In Chains occasionally, but they suck at it. April Long put it best with just two words: “painfully unimaginative.” I don’t know that Staind qualifis as emo, they seem more grunge (like AIC) but they definitely qualify for SUCK. They bob in the toilet-shaped filing cabinet alongside Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, and Creed. The only question that remains is are they floaters or sinkers?
Saleski, don’t give me any of that “sounds like” bullshit. In fact, don’t use any argument you aren’t willing to hear in reverse. You’re just trying to piss me off.
Staind is a bad grunge ripoff, but have no doubt they have an emo core.
Agreed on Cohen, Donald. The kids don’t know Cohen, nor does Cohen listening lead to mascara abuse.
it hardly matters to me, since i mostly don’t give a crap about either emo or grunge.
I think if emo kids listened to Leonard Cohen they would explode from emotional overdose.
Yeah, I think it’s real cute when people get called for being assy or something and respond with a “I’m just kidding” or “I don’t care.” If someone doesn’t care, why’d they open their mouth the first fucking place? Just to be assy? That’s fine, but I call it assy whether they care or not.
Anyone still interested in the discussion is welcome to continue now that we’ve cleared the room of the disinterested. Thank you, drive through.
not tryin’ (tho apparently succeeding) to be assy. i’m just saying that my ear parts put those two bands in the same bucket. sure, i’d much rather listen to Alice though, mostly, i’d rather not listen to either.
Jake LeBotz better stay away from Russia. His latest album is said to be: “The rawest, saddest, acoustic album ever made. Music to kill or be killed to”
If that ain’t ban-worthy in Russia, I don’t know what is.
The problem with banning goth/emo is you ban goth girls at the same time, and if Shirley Manson is wrong, I don’t want to be right. I don’t want to live in a world without goth girls, and I won’t!
Russia… i love you.
who else would be so genious as to ban emo music and emo kids.
ah, this made me happy, hope it will be in full effect. i have nothing against depression or suicide. but i sure hate that fucking music. my chemical romance… ugh.. i dont want to mention other bands.
And Yes, cohen is good so good. i tried to make people who like emo music listen to cohen, they dont like it, ignorant ingrates.
Stay True To The Russians!
