I Can’t Quit The Blues
How do things slip through the cracks? I finished my review of Buddy Guy’s Skin Deep yesterday and in the process of writing it I spent a good amount of time listening to that and other Guy albums. I was reminded there is one Buddy Guy album — a compilation, actually — that has eluded me for years.
The Complete Chess Studio Recordings has been out of print for some time, replaced by the single-disc Buddy’s Blues. I have the latter and it’s a phenomenal disc of music. It’s so good, in fact, it leaves you wanting more. It made me want it all. I’m sure Buddy’s Blues cherrypicked a lot of the best stuff, but I’m equally sure there is going to be something on the Complete set I’m going to love. A lot of his best work was done while at Chess, even though he was frustrated by the Chess brothers’ unwillingness to really let him loose. I love so much of what I’ve already heard from this era. I have to hear the rest.
Unfortunately, it is out of print which meant finding a used copy somewhere or paying outrageous prices for a new one from a specialty store/collector. Yesterday, I became obsessed and decided I was having one of these.
First I tried eBay; I lost. Then I found a used place online and I like the price. They say the condition is very good. We’ll see. I’m choosing to be optimistic. I ordered it this morning and I can’t wait for its arrival.
