Springsteen Magic Tour Set List 07/31/08 Giants Stadium #3
29. Say it with me. 29 times. Not just 29 times, 29 consecutive times. Not just 29 consecutive times, but this marks 5 multi-city stands where he played “Mary’s Place” each night. 29 bowls of God’s wrath lay empty at his feet.
Let’s move on (for now). Three songs that don’t get played enough were performed on this third and final night at Giants Stadium. “Blinded By The Light” and “Cadillac Ranch” were played back to back. I might have left the show at that point because there is no way it could get any better. All right, so I wouldn’t have left but I love those two. A few songs later, after the offensive “Mary’s Place,” we get “Incident on 57th Street.” I bet 11 would forgive the playing of fucking “Bobby Jean” (he insists the first word is part of the song’s title even if I’ve seen no official documentation to confirm it) in exchange for “Incident.”
Next up? Foxboro, where our good friend Lisa McKay will be watching in the General Admission section. I can’t wait to hear her report from the show. Nashville is coming. The countdown is on like Voltron!

Say it with me: “Jersey Girl”…Tom Waits didn’t even play that on his most recent tour.
That’s just all kinds of awesome.
Can’t complain about Pretty Flamingo…I think he’s played that one like three times total. And will you guys knock it the hell off with Bobby Jean? I kinda feel your pain about “Marys” (especially stretching it to 15 minutes), but BJ (no pun intended) is a great song.

I agree - Bobby Jean is great - and Mary’s Place in Greensboro brought the house down (it was only 5 minutes long at that point and the tour debut) - why don’t you guys like that song? And into Waiting on a Sunny Day - do you guys not like the sing alongs or what? I’d take that over Adam Raised a Cain..I don’t think a setlist could get much better than this last Meadowlands show - damn!
Maybe if you heard the solo version of Bobby Jean from the devlis and Dust tour - that and Long Time Coming were highlights of that tour, to me anyway. That last line of Bobby Jean, “there’ll be a radio playing and you’ll hear me sing this song - and if you do you’ll know I’m thinking of you…” that’s great stuff, I don’t get why any Bruce fam wouldn’t love that song..
Kurt, thanks for the comments and for coming to the defense of “Bobby Jean” and “Mary’s Place.” I’m afraid you’ll never convince me but I’m glad you stopped by and threw in your 2 cents…
I’m not real big for singalongs as a general rule (there are exceptions). “Waitin’ On A Sunny Day” was better when it was “Hungry Heart.” “Mary’s Place” is derivative of so many of his songs I don’t even know where to start.
As for “Bobby Jean,” even if I pretended I liked that song — and I obviously don’t — I still don’t understand why a song that wasn’t a single from a 25-year old album should be played so many more times than other non-singles from albums of roughly the same age. “Mary’s Place” has been played 30 consecutive shows! 30! “Bobby Jean” has been played I’d wager 2/3 of the tour. Why? There are other songs that should be getting played more often than those two.
“Adam Raised a Cain” is an actual song. “Bobby Jean” is not. Bruce has written 100 songs about friendship that are 10x better than “Bobby Jean.”
