Springsteen Nashville Countdown Day 20: “My City of Ruins”

If he wants to play half of The Rising each night, let’s make it a good one then.

The Rising is an uneven album and is about four songs too long, which I see as two separate issues.  There are some good songs that don’t fit on this record.  There are tracks that aren’t actual songs as I understand the definition.  Interspersed there are some excellent songs that would shine a little brighter in a different sky, if I may paraphrase Eddie Vedder.

“My City of Ruins” is more than a song.  It is a hymn.  It is work of sacred beauty that uplifts and inspires.  It is call to persevere, to overcome.  It is healing.  I want to join Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and sing:

Now with these hands,
With these hands,
With these hands,
I pray Lord
With these hands,
With these hands,
I pray for the strength, Lord
With these hands,
With these hands,
I pray for the faith, Lord
We pray for your love, Lord
We pray for the lost, Lord
We pray for this world, Lord
We pray for the strength, Lord
We pray for the strength, Lord

Come on
Come on
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up
Come on, rise up

I can count the number of times in my adult life I’ve been moved to tears on one hand.  I’m not ashamed when I say I lay odds at 4:1 that this song would add to the tally.

  1. I can count the number of times in my adult life I’ve been moved to tears on one hand.

wow! there’s a big difference between you and me. that happens to me on a weekly (if not daily) basis.

  2. If I were to pick a song off The Rising, it’d be “Countin On A Miracle.” Don’t really know why, and I know thats not considered by most to be one of the better tracks on that album, but thats my favorite song from Rising.

I guess its that whole “I don’t believe in magic…but for you I would” line. Classic f’n Springsteen lyric. So simple, yet it kinda says it all.

  3. hat happens to me on a weekly (if not daily) basis.

    Common among senior citizens. ;-)

I like “Countin’ on A Miracle” as an album track but it’s not my favorite on the record.

  4. My 3 favorite songs off The Rising are:

    1) You’re Missing
    2) My City Of Ruins
    3) Countin’ on A Miracle

  5. 2/3 ain’t bad, Donald. “Countin’” isn’t bad, either, but it’s not my #3.

  6. I cry for the English language every time I read COAF. :)

    Great, great song though.

  7. As someone who has edited some of your offenses, Brewster, I think I’d shut up. :)

It is a great song and I’d love to hear it live.
