Springsteen Nashville Countdown Day 14: “Kitty’s Back”

“Kitty’s Back” is a relatively new ‘discovery’ for me. It wasn’t until the release of the 30th Anniversary Edition of Born to Run that I became fully aware of the power and cool of this song, which is odd because “Kitty’s Back” isn’t on Born to Run.

“Kitty” was performed at the Hammersmith-Odeon show from 1975 that was part of the BTR re-issue and it is that smoldering, 17-minute version of the song that really got my attention. When that live performance was released separately on CD, that became one of the songs I listened to most.

I can’t imagine Bruce & Co. lighting it up any hotter than they did the night long ago and far away, but I sure as hell would like to hear them try. This is now, for me, one of those songs that screams to be played live- a song that could never be properly captured in a studio. “Kitty’s Back” needs the stage to be complete, and I’d like to be there to hear it.

  1. yeah, it’s a killer song….especially with all those crashing chords right in the middle of the solos.

    was incredible in hartford.

  2. Wha-wha-what? Are you and I agreeing on something?

The crashing chaos is fantastic. I really want to hear this one.

  3. Could someone wake me when ‘Kitty’s Back’ is over?
