My New BFF: Jellyfish
There are days I’m almost as smart as I think I am and today is one of those days. My craving for Matthew Sweet’s indie power-pop gem “We’re The Same” was a great gateway to one of the newest additions to my CD collection: The Jellyfish.
The ‘fish have been on the periphery of my musical radar for quite some time but I never connected the impulse to check them out with a purchase until this weekend when I spotted both Bellybutton and Spilt Milk at Grimey’s.
A good friend turned me on to Jason Falkner, formerly of Jellyfish. I heard some of these songs when we’d hang out here and there but I never really got to absorb them for myself.
As I listen to Spilt for a second time this afternoon, I find myself asking one question: where has this been my whole life? How could I have let so many years pass without adding this music?
Just one of these songs has more hooks than some alleged pop stars have conjured in their entire career. Someone at a major label should give Roger Manning, Andy Sturmer, or Jason Falkner $10M per year to write pop songs for their stable of artists. I wouldn’t let a pop record out the door without the approval of one of them.
I’ve now listened to Bellybutton as well and can now officially declare Jellyfish my favorite thing ever. Today. They are my new BFF.

Jellyfish is a very common thing to find playing on my Ipod, Josh. Totally awesome. If you get completely addicted, seek out that stupidly, insanely limited-edition Fan Club box that came out years ago. I got (ahem) a copy of that and absolutely cherish it. Wish they’d re-release the damned thing so I could get a legit version. (Wait, did I say that? I mean, “I wish they’d re-release that so all those who missed out on it could get to enjoy it.”) They’re more popular today than they ever were when they existed. Sales are guaranteed.
I was looking at that ridiculously limited edition box set today and it’s ridiculously high re-sale value. I almost just did it because I’m crazy and stupid. I’m trying to have some manner of restraint.
Jellyfish are awesome.
The friend of mine I mentioned does have the box set so I can *cough* get a copy of this from him, but you and I both know how I am. I wants one.
