First Impressions: B.B. King’s One Kind Favor

I have now finished listening to One Kind Favor and my initial reaction seems to be holding.  I like this record.

I’ve started an outline of a full-length review of the album, focusing on some of the broad themes that occurred to me as I was listening.  I didn’t make detailed, track-by-track notes so I’m still thinking about the album as a whole rather than individual parts.  I need to give it a few more listens before I get more specific than “I like it.”

On the first passthrough I can tell you that “See That My Grave Is Kept Clean,” which features the line that gives the album its title, and “Sitting On Top of the World” have emerged as early favorites.  ”Grave” was written and originally recorded by Blind Lemon Jefferson.  ”World” was written by the Mississippi Sheiks and famously recorded by the great Howlin’ Wolf.  Both songs are great.

King is in great voice and he can still create that inimitable B.B. King lead guitar sound and he does so often on this wonderful collection.
