Oasis Kick Off World Tour in Seattle

People wonder why I make a big deal of Springsteen and his set lists.  Here’s a great example of why.  Oasis kicked off the world tour that will support their new album Dig Out Your Soul (set for release 10/7) with a marathon… 18-song set.
Guys, I like Oasis.  A lot.  I don’t apologize for it.  I’ve “seen” them live.  They’re capable of being a great rock band and I like them.  A lot.  There are some bands who are special in concert and it’s when you see shit like this — and there are other examples — that you get a reminder of who they are.
Now, setting aside the (ahem) length issue, one thing I find interesting when a band transitions from one album and tour to the next is to see which songs from the previous album stay in the set list.  Not surprisingly, the two songs from Don’t Believe The Truth that went to #1 in the UK (”Lyla,” “The Importance of Being Idle”) stayed in the set.  Of course, with only 18 songs being played and a new album to include…

  1. ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’
  2. ‘Lyla’
  3. ‘The Shock Of The Lightning’
  4. ‘Cigarettes And Alcohol’
  5. ‘The Meaning Of Soul’
  6. ‘To Be Where There’s Life’
  7. ‘The Masterplan’
  8. ‘Songbird’
  9. ‘Slide Away’
  10. ‘Morning Glory’
  11. ‘Ain’t Got Nothin”
  12. ‘The Importance of Being Idle’
  13. ‘Wonderwall’
  14. ‘Supersonic’
  15. ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’
  16. ‘Falling Down’
  17. ‘Champagne Supernova’
  18. ‘I Am The Walrus’

  1. was the meaning of soul not on the us release of dbtt?

  2. I can’t complain about set lengths anymore. You can get a smoking 18-song set or a dreary, drawn-out, horrible 30-song set because the band feels obligated to do so. I’ll take the smoking shorter set any day.

  3. “The Meaning of Soul” was on the record but wasn’t a single here (and I don’t believe it was a UK single, either).

Length isn’t everything, is that what you’re trying to say, Tom? Fair enough. I guess it’s because I know Oasis has, at this point in their career, a deep enough pool of songs to play more. I’d like to get a few more songs for what bands charge these days. Now, I’ve heard tales of the old Ramones shows that were the most intense 30 minutes imaginable and everyone went home happy. I don’t know if that flies for me anymore as a general rule.

  4. My one question is…did they play Live Forever as an encore? Or at all? I have been searching the set lists and I will be choked if I don’t hear them play my favorite Oasis tune. I know they can’t please everyone, but I have been waiting 10 years to see these guys. Also, what was the merch. like?

I am excited none the less. Going to see them Saturday in Calgary, 4th row on the floor! YAHOO!

  5. Arden, “Live Forever” seems to have been inexplicably cut from the set list so far. It’s not going unnoticed. No one is very happy about it.
