Preview: Magic Slim & The Teardrops’ Midnight Blues

One down, too many to go.

I just finished my review of Magic Slim & The Teardrops’ Midnight Blues CD.  I’m holding it until Monday or Tuesday to time it with the release date, so in the meantime here’s a preview/excerpt/appetizer for the full review.

Album opener “Let Me Love You” would set the tone for a great night were it used to open a show.  Maybe it’s because he produced it, but Slim’s opening lick sounds an awful lot like Moss on his Play It ‘Til Tomorrow CD.  I’m not suggesting Slim knicked Nick’s lead or that he’d need to but there is something in the sound and style of the opening lead that reminds me of Moss, and that’s not a bad thing!

Of the last three blues reviews I’ve written, 71-year old Slim is the youngest (Buddy Guy, 72, and B.B. King, 83).  He may not be a New Kid On The Block, but there’s a hell of a lot more life and soul on this album than the embarrassing New Kid record released last week.

  1. I finally got my copy and I really like it. Then again, I’m a blues slut, so what do I know?

  2. I seem to remember someone sending you a “preview” of this one ;)

It’s a good album. The review will go live this week, probably Tuesday.

  3. Yes, I did get a preview and then I got a hard copy. Both were appreciated.

Speaking of preview copies, there are two live recordings you should hear. Albert Cummings and Joe Bonamassa. Perhaps I can contact someone and get those to you. ;)
