Maybe I Don’t Want To Know The Way To Normal

I bought Ben Folds’ new album Way To Normal and… well, yeah.  I’m definitely not digging it yet.

For starters, I don’t like the sound/production.  It feels compressed and lifeless and it hurts my ears.  Beyond that, the songs have yet to capture me.  Ben’s smartass routine is often clever, but the jokes aren’t as good as this time or it’s just worn thin.  The melodies aren’t as immediate, either.  I’m just not sold on this… yet.

I’m going to listen a couple more times to see if anything emerges.  If not, I’ll always have Silverman and Unauthorized Biography

  1. For me, hearing that he is splitting with his wife ruined this album. Well, that and the fact that it reminds me of the dreadful Fear of Pop.

I know it’s naive, but I think when a guy writes beautiful moving songs dedicated to a gal, they ought to work things out.

    I’ll stick with Messner.

  2. Which time, Phillip. Mr. Folds is now married for the fourth time. Pity.

I’m with you though. On any given day, Messner is my favorite Folds record.
