Blink of an Eye: Adam Duritz on B-Sides Concept Album; Danny Federici Passes Away
It was a strange afternoon yesterday. Here is what I’m sure will be an overly long recap.
I’ve been working on booking guests for the B-Sides Concept Album program for awhile with varying degrees of luck. I had been hoping to book a member of Counting Crows to talk about Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings. A publicist for the band said she’d see what she could do to make it happen. We stayed in contact. Thursday arrives and I still have no solid confirmation that it will or won’t happen. I start mentally preparing to do a version of the show that doesn’t include interviewing a member of the band-
and then I get an e-mail from the publicist. She tells me she was working on getting Adam on the show for tonight (tonight still being Thursday). I nearly shat myself. It’s not locked, but it’s possible. I get myself in high gear now preparing two shows: one with Adam, one without. I can’t remember when I’ve felt that much of an adrenaline rush. The publicist and I exchange a few more e-mails. I gave her my cell phone number and she called me. The adrenaline was really powerful now. I was scrambling. She basically lays it out for me that we can go tomorrow (Friday, which is now today, at 3:30 PM EDT) or perhaps another Thursday. I tell her I’m happy with whatever works best for Adam. She says she’ll get back to me.
I get off the phone and doubt begins to take hold. “Nice going, slick,” I tell myself. “How very cool and collected of you. I’m sure the stammering was very impressive. You just blew the interview.” The adrenaline rush is now turning into a crash. It’s not going to happen.
Minutes later I get an e-mail. Friday. 3:30. Done. Shockwaves course through my body.
The regular, Thursday edition of the show kicks off and I make the big announcement. Adam Duritz, Friday April 18, 2008, BSCA, 3:30 PM EDT. There is much fanfare. I also announce that Dan Wilson will be my guest on the next Thursday edition of the B-Sides Concept Album (4/24/08 10 PM EDT). Excitement is running high.
We segue from the announcement of the great guests that will be on the show and I begin looking forward to next week’s Bruce Springsteen concert in Atlanta. We’re coming down the home stretch of a great conversation when Donald Gibson sees the news on the AP Wire: Dan Federici has passed away.
The exuberant energy is dies hard and fast, shock and sadness filling the air. Snap! It can happen that fast.
