It’s Black (Keys) Friday (Part 1)
TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried is on the road, on her way to S. Carolina to comfort friends going through a tough time for a few days. I’ve been left to my own devices with a few dollars in my pocket. Any guesses what I did for lunch?
A coke and a 4*-pack of new CDs, of course:
- The Black Keys - Rubber Factory
- The Black Keys - Magic Potion
- The Black Keys - Attack & Release
Credit where credit is due: my asshole brother has been pushing the Black Keys at me for years now. I resisted. Why? Well, consider the source. Sorry, I couldn’t resist that one.
I don’t know why I resisted. Wanna hear something even funnier about that? The reason my brother recommended them to me is because he and I both like The White Stripes a lot. I told one of my co-workers, also a White Stripes fan, about them. He bought a Black Keys record and really liked it. Did I relent and follow suit? Hell the fuck no. I really don’t know why.
Funnier still is that I’ve had Rubber Factory on my iPod for over a year now. He loaned me the CD and told me I should give it a try. When did I get around to that? This morning. Chalk it up to temporary insanity.
I guess you could say the impact was immediate. I went out and bought my own copy and added two more for good measure. I have made amends. Attack & Release was released just this week and was produced by DangerMouse. I’m very curious about this collaboration. The snob in me wants to shit all over the very idea of it before I’ve listened to a note. The guy who just dropped $15 on it is thinking I should at least give it a listen first, and indeed I shall.
My worldview is crumbling rapidly; my little brother is only half the moron I thought he was. What’s next? The Raiders win a Super Bowl?

Sir, recognition….
Awesome. I’ve been mentioning the Black Keys with you in mind for a while now. I knew you’d dig these guys.
You gotta get their first one, The Big Come Up - that one is so damned awesome. All of them are good in varying ways, but that one delivers some delicious sludge. And Magic Potion is wonderfully divisive. I love how pretty much all of the indie world has crapped on it, but it cherry-picks some really great stuff from the very best the 60s’ and 70s’ blues-rock had to offer.
I will look for The Big Come Up soon and check it out. I’m listening to Rubber again.
I wasn’t sure I was going to like Attack & Reverse but I really do. I haven’t listened to Potion enough to have rendered much of an opinion on it but I’ll be checking it out again soon.
