Liveblogging Accelerate: “I’m Gonna DJ”
I didn’t like the live version of this on the double live set they just released. I forgot they put this one on the record.
Meh. Let’s give the studio version a listen.
I like it a little better so far than I did on the live album.
As we reach the end of the album I realize Accelerate has the same problem as its predecessors: dynamics. Accelerate is barely more dynamic than their last three records, it’s just louder. Rather than being barely melodic and boring this one is barely melodic and harsh.
I’m going to go back and listen to it again (and again) and see how many of these initial reactions stick with me, but there you have it. My first impressions of R.E.M.’s Accelerate after one complete listen. Thanks for playing along.

I hate “I’m Gonna DJ”. I hated it on the live album. I hate it on the new album (which I don’t have yet) but have listened to online. I’m sure when my CD arrives it will only confirm my dislike. As for the rest of the album, so far its getting my thumbs up. I won’t hold it against you if the album doesn’t grow on you. BTW REM fan club tickets go on sale tomorrow @ 10AM EST.

Matt, I agree. “I’m Gonna DJ” is a dumb song. The chorus is kind of catchy. It could be a fun in-concert song. But its not going to get any playtime on my iPod.
