Music of the Moment: Eden Brent - Mississippi Number 1
I recently suggested the Black Crowes were a vintage band for modern times. I got to thinking about that statement this morning as I listened to an advance of Eden Brent’s upcoming record, Mississippi Number One. Like the Crowes, Brent has made a record unapologetically behind the times.
I haven’t yet finished listening to it the first time but I can already tell I’m going to have to listen to it again before attempting a formal review of the record. That’s not a departure for me. It’s rare that I’d form a strong enough opinion on a first listen to write a review. Even when it does happen, I don’t trust my initial reactions enough to allow that to be the sole basis of a review.
Brent, winner of the 2006 International Blues Challenge (acoustic division), was described by one critic as “Bessie Smith meets Diana Krall meets Janis Joplin.” That’s pretty good- both the company and description. The talent is obvious, even seven songs into M#1.
I have to slow myself down, though. I’m in such a hurry to start the album over that I run the risk of missing the rest of it. Mississippi Number One will be released April 15 by Yellow Dog records.
