Music of the Moment: Sarah McLachlan - Afterglow Live

Victory is mine! Josh 1, TV 0. TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried and I are siting here in the living room with the “kids,” wasting time before we call it a night and I’ve put on some music rather than mindlessly flipping channels.

I popped in my Sarah McLachlan Afterglow Live. I can’t believe I allowed myself to miss her show in Birmingham! The set was released as a CD/DVD package. Unfortunately, the CD doesn’t have the full program. I hate that. I wish they’d have made this a 2CD/DVD combo pack, but that’s neither here nor there. I’m watching/listening to the DVD and Sarah Mc has just edged ahead of Norah in my cosmic, heavenly sing-off. I guess I should put my Norah DVD in next.

I was going to put in one of my CDs but I got overwhelmed by the choices. I also tried to choose something that wouldn’t annoy TWTWIM and send her from the room. Sarah Mc is something we can both agree on.

I’ve only seen McLachlan live once and I was really surprised by how great she was live. I wasn’t surprised that she was able to sing the hell out of her songs on stage as much as I was delighted by how well the music translated live. When you listen to some of these songs in their studio incarnation, you might not think they’d come off well live. They really do, and this Afterglow Live DVD is a good example of it.

  1. As an update, there’s not a commercial release of the full Afterglow DVD on CD, but you can download the full show in MP3 or FLAC from her web site.

Having already bought the CD/DVD package, it would make that a bit of an expensive purchase — especially because I can and have ripped the DVD audio — but it is a viable option. Very interesting. It also appears you can buy these as individual tracks, so I could buy the tracks that are on the DVD but not the DVD and have a full version of it in lossless audio. Very, very interesting.

  2. But those not currently owning it have the added value of buying the DVD for the benefit of getting to stare at the very lovely Sarah McLachlan. What do you get to look at when you buy files? That’s right. Air.

I remember seeing her on, I think, Conan O’Brien’s show way back when Fumbling came out. Not only did her voice blow me away, but she was just gorgeous. Man.

I bet they’ve edited those files in such a way that you can’t match them up to the CD and make your own full concert very easily. That just seems too good to be true.

  3. I prefer the physical product and would love to have been able to buy a 2-CD/DVD package of the show and have all the goodness. Sadly, this was not an option. You may be right about the editing job, though, and that’s a good point. I’ll either stick with my rip or buy the whole package in FLAC and burn it.

  4. Ah how many times I’ve stared at my music for forever trying to find something that appeals to me and won’t drive my wife crazy.

  5. It’s a job hazard, Sir Brewster, it is indeed. I go through the same thing in the car with my iPod.

  6. That’s very true to, there I am blaming my wife, but manys the time I have sat in front of my music collection for long periods of time trying to decide what to listen to and my wife is miles away.

You would think this would be easier with iPod giving you all the music at the touch of a finger, but I find it even more difficult. There is too much too choose from. To many times I sit stupified scrolling that wheel looking for something perfect for the given moment.

  7. [...] didn’t make it all the way through the Afterglow Live DVD the other night, but we did watch about 2/3 of it and that was enough to make me want to start my [...]
