Song of the Year Nominee #2: “Consoler of the Lonely” by The Raconteurs
I nominated The Gutter Twins’ “All Misery/Flowers” as a potential song of the year candidate when I got their album earlier this month and I’m ready to add another nominee. The almost title track from The Raconteurs second record (the song is singular, the album plural) is everything you could want from a song that pairs the talents of Jack White and Brendan Benson.
The song starts and stops and changes time signatures with blasts of Jack White electric blues guitar blast while Benson supplies some needed pop sense. These two really are ideal collaborators. Benson gets some edge and fire from White, White gets some tunefulness and pop from Benson. Each is consistently great on his own and “Consoler of the Lonely” is a great example of what they can achieve when they work together.
My two favorite songs of 2008 so far are from so-called supergroups.

I am looking forward to hearing this album. Thanks for the heads up on the Raconteurs song, I definitely want to check it out. And The Gutter Twins’ album just keeps getting better and better; I’m surprised at how much of a real gem the album has become.
