The Song Remains The Same, Only Better

Get the Led out. Un-Ledded. Whole Lotta Zep. You’ve heard all the jokes before, right? What does one do when one has overdosed on hours of live Led Zeppelin?

I’ve listened all the way through the new The Song Remains The Same and finally finished How The West Was Won.

Reactions to the new Song… it’s an improvement, sonically. I haven’t listened to the original version in years, but the upgrade is immediately obvious. Remastering is tricky business. How does one take advantage of new technology while preserving the spirit of the original? It gets even trickier when you’re taking something as well known and well worn as The Song Remains The Same. To my ears, this new version walks the line pretty well. Some listeners may find charms in the dated old version, but the goal of a live recording like this should be to take you inside Madison Square Garden where the songs were performed. This is probably damn close to the way Led Zeppelin sounded on that night…

Well, I say that night but it might be nights plural. The band filmed three shows at MSG for the film The Song Remains The Same. I don’t know that this isn’t a compilation of those shows. Regardless, this is probably a faithful representation of what fans heard that night/those nights.
