Two Fools Born A Minute… Or… How I Turned a Free CD Into A Money-Losing Proposition
It’s on days like these I thank the stars above TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried is a patient, patient woman. Technically I’ve been appreciative of that for almost 10 years now, but roll with me on this one.
Last week I got a review copy (read: free copy) of the I’m Not There soundtrack (the Dylan biopic from last year). I listened to it several times and yesterday posted my review. Done. Close the books. Except…
Today I ordered two CDs by artists I “discovered” by listening to that soundtrack. That ‘free’ review copy has just cost me the price of two new CDs. I ordered Cat Power’s The Greatest and Los Lobos’ Kiko. I really fell in love with CP’s version of “Stuck Inside of Memphis With the Mobile Blues Again” and my BC Magazine cohort Sir Donald of Gibson recommended The Greatest as a good place to start. I wasn’t expecting to like LL’s version of “Billy 1″ as much as I did. Mr. Saleski thinks Kiko is a better option than going with a greatest hits package, so I’m taking his word for it.
Add those to the copy of the new King’s X record and the Mudhoney re-issue I ordered simultaneously and I’ve actually found a way to come out on low end. Yes, ladies, I’m taken.

Kiko is awesome! Pretty much all of Los Lobos’ stuff is awesome! Such a cool band. I have most of their albums and so far have yet to be disappointed. If you get hooked like I did, be sure and get the MoFi hybrid SACDs of Good Morning Aztlan and This Time. Incredible sound. I thought they were amazing sounding to begin with, but they actually were significant improvements over the originals. And that’s just the CD layer.
I think I’ll be queuing up some Los Lobos on the way to work this morning . . .
Thanks, Tom. I got to start listening to the record yesterday but I was just in such a fog that I’m going to start it over this weekend when I’m more alert. I did like it so far, though.
