We Are The World, We Are The Children: Bob Dylan, George Harrison, and Bangladesh

After listening to all the Zeppelin, I queued up George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh. I got it as a Christmas present from our friends in S. Carolina and got to listen to a lot of it, but never got to hear it all. I think I picked up where I left off, right after George’s lovely acoustic performance of “Here Comes The Sun.”

In other words, I stopped just before Dylan’s set. Now I’ve heard the whole thing (I think, I don’t have my play counts in front of me). There have been hundreds of benefit concerts, and we can all thank/blame George Harrison because Bangladesh was one of, if not the, first.

I’m pretty impressed with Dylan’s performance from this show in 1971. As an amateur Dylan historian, I’ve come to understand that not every night was a winner. This set is pretty good, and Harrison sits in on guitar. The highlight is “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry.” There aren’t dozens of live versions of that song and it’s always been one of my favorites from Highway 61 Revisited.
