I will sing a new song. I’m not listening to “Prairie Wedding” or “Why Can’t You Be?” this morning. I’m not planning on listening to them this afternoon, either. I’m going in a different direction and that direction is home. Back Door Slam’s “Come Home” would be in the running for song of the [...]

Just a quickie: I unexpectedly wrote a review of Johnny Young’s The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions last night. I ordered it from Amazon and planned to write something short about it for here but once I got started I couldn’t stop, so the review is over at BC Magazine.
I’ll be contributing to “Iguana” [...]

I recently suggested the Black Crowes were a vintage band for modern times. I got to thinking about that statement this morning as I listened to an advance of Eden Brent’s upcoming record, Mississippi Number One. Like the Crowes, Brent has made a record unapologetically behind the times.

I am the easiest person to shop for and at the same time it’s impossible to surprise me.
The other day at work a co-worker asked me to stop by her desk because she had something for me. She showed me her copy of Buddy Guy’s Bring ‘Em In, asking me if I’d like to [...]

Another Grammy ceremony, another disappointment.
No, I’m not talking about Amy, Kanye, or Foo Fighters. In fact, I didn’t actually watch the telecast. I know, I know. Mr. Music Fanboy didn’t watch the Grammys. So what disappointed me?
The World Music category. I was hoping Rahim Al Haj would win tonight, but [...]

Bad title and blatant cash grab aspirations of the Chess brothers aside, I’m having a lot of fun listening to this record this morning.
Chess Records released Folk Blues compilations for Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Hooker in an attempt to attract the folkies of the ’60s. That’s fair enough if the [...]

After all that “mood” music from earlier, I decided to liven things up and have a little fun. Gerry Hundt’s Since Way Back might be the most fun I had listening to a record last year.
Since Way Back can be appreciated on so many levels. It’s fun! The joy of [...]

Ten years ago, the music world lost a giant when Jimmy Rogers passed away at age 73 as a result of his bout with colon cancer.
Jimmy Rogers is perhaps best known for his long partnership with the great Muddy Waters, serving as the rhythm guitarist in Waters’ band for many years both on record for [...]

The 2008 BMA nominations are out so you know what the news is, here’s my reaction to it.
First, I’ve got a lot of music I need to get my hands on and hear before I submit my final ballot. I’m very interested in James Blood Ullmer’s album. Ullmer was nominated three or four times. [...]

It’s that time of year again! The Blues Foundation has announced the nominees for this years Blues Music Awards. I’m looking over the list now and will be posting my reaction to it tonight or tomorrow.
I’ve got to renew my membership so I can vote again this year.
