After watching No Bull on DVD, I looked at my CD towers and realized there are only two AC/DC albums in my library: Back In Black and the 2-CD Live, which is the closest thing to a career-spanning retrospective in their catalog.

I want pepper in my coffee every night. “Circus Envy,” boys and girls! This is a strong set, but unfortunately “She Just Wants To Be” is still part of it. One loyal reader has told me this one is better live than I might think and that may be, but it’s still not a real song. I’ve been very enthusiastic about R.E.M.’s set lists night in and night out because the ratio of song:not song has been so wonderfully balanced, but “She Just Wants To Be” just has to go.

Look out, boys and girls, they’ve found one they like. This is funny. Starting with “At My Most Beautiful,” R.E.M. found a song they hadn’t played all tour and then played it multiple nights in a row. We can now add to that “Just A Touch,” “I Took Your Name,” and “She Just Wants To Be.”
2/3 ain’t bad. Bring back “AMMB!”

We have a debut! No, it’s not “Monty Got A Raw Deal.” It’s from Reveal, which is only slightly less disappointing than if it had been another one from Around The Sun. Our friend S.Rod will be mildly pleased by this, but I’m pretty sure the rest of R.E.M. nation will rate this a thumbs down. “She Just Wants To Be.” Meh.
They’ve stopped playing “At My Most Beautiful” after a string of shows and have fallen in love with “Just A Touch.” They should play both.

Tonight’s B-Sides Concept Album program is being cancelled owing to exhaustion from events of yesterday. My apologies. There are many things I look forward to discussing with you all in the coming weeks.

After a tough day yesterday, I went wandering the streets trying to busy my mind. It was risky going in to Satan Best Buy. Surely they had a copy of the Best Buy Exclusive package of David Gilmour’s Live in Gdansk. It’s a Best Buy Exclusive. Of course they’d have it in stock by Wednesday, wouldn’t they?

I guess I’m having a maudlin moment today. It’s well-earned, if you ask me. It just so happens we had a little sadness enter our lives yesterday, at the same time I’ve been listening to a lot of Pink Floyd and David Gilmour.
Today’s song of the day is “Wish You Were Here.” Most of the song doesn’t apply to how I’m feeling today, but there are lines here and there that do and the feeling of the song certainly seems to fit. I’m not usually one for sap, but I’m feeling sappy today and I guess I feel like sharing just a touch of it. Besides, I don’t think anything I would write today wouldn’t be imbued with what’s going on inside so why not put a bow around it and make the theme work?

I have a lot of topics out there I need to get to around here and I just haven’t had the time to explore them all in the depth and at the speed with which I’d like. I want to continue re-visiting Tom Petty’s Echo. I also want to continue with the Pink Floyd discussion we started (as I finish reviewing David Gilmour’s Live in Gdansk), and I’ve started listening again to Metallica’s Death Magnetic and I’d like to get some of my thoughts on it out there.
I’ll start with a little Metallica discussion. For starters, I’d like to point you to my friend Mark Saleski’s ruminations on Death Magnetic. I’m not sure I’m going to come to the same conclusions, but he makes some very good points.
The first thing I noticed with DM is that Metallica had a bit of an Accelerate moment, wherein R.E.M. re-awakened Peter Buck. After wasting Kirk Hammett on St. Anger , Metallica once again integrates the frenetic licks of one of metal’s great lead guitarists. For that alone, Death Magnetic is a step forward, back. I’m not going to waste a lot of time taking the piss out of St. Anger, but any album that completely ignores Hammett is making a mistake. That doesn’t happen on this record. If Kirk is one of the reasons you listen to Metallica, Death Magnetic gives you a reason to listen.

So I was feeling real bad and I was about to give in, so I went to Satan Best Buy to buy the Satan Best Buy exclusive 5-Disc package of David Gilmour’s Live in Gdansk set. Let me emphasize the words Best Buy Exclusive. Let me explain the concept exclusive. Exclusive means you’re the only asshole on the block that has it. So, if a fat fucker with no self-control were to wander in to the local Satan Best Buy store and the Satan Best Buy store didn’t have any of the exclusive item, why, he’d find himself in quite a pickle.
Some of us are slow learners. Some of us would go back to Satan Best Buy a second time, hoping that UPS had corrected Best Buy’s oversight and brought them some fucking copies. A second time, I walked away empty handed.
What. The. Fuck. You see, motherfuckers, this is another reason I hate retail exclusives. What manner of inane, incompetent bullshit is this? I finally got mouthy with the little Blue Shirt idiot the second time I went up there. Unacceptable.

This one gets a grade of solid. There’s nothing on here that’s bowling me over, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have enjoyed this show. “Until The Day Is Done” hasn’t been played a lot, and it’s in the set list. We also get “Pretty Persuasion” and “Get Up,” so nothing to feel bad about at all.
