Have you ever fallen in love with a song and had absolutely no idea why? It happens to me. A lot. I know why I like most of the songs I like, but there are plenty that I just have no explanation for. Take “Laughing,” from R.E.M.’s classic debut record Murmur.
Most of my favorite songs [...]

It never makes the countdowns, but I have to ask: how many love songs are better than Dire Straits’ “Romeo & Juliet?” It’s actually fittingly symbolic that this song floats ever so slightly beneath the radar, because that’s Mark Knopfler. The guy’s fuckin’ great, but doesn’t quite get the acclaim he deserves.
His albums always get [...]

I wanted to put the two new Gilmours in the CD player last night when I got home from Sears and the mall. I wanted to get some work done. Even though I didn’t have to put the tires on myself, I was still tired. I guess getting strung along can exhaust a person. Either [...]

When I learned of Nick Moss’ participation in Daniel Pearl World Music Days yesterday I was reminded of the interview I did with him on my BlogTalkRadio program last year shortly after his Play It ‘Til Tomorrow record was released. We discussed a song from that album, “Mistakes From The Past,” a place where the [...]

After the disappointment of the first listen, I couldn’t get excited about listening to Way To Normal again- at least not right away. I needed a palette cleanser. I needed something to put me in a better headspace.
Sometimes it takes a couple tries to find that album but I knew exactly where to start today: [...]

It’s Dave Carter day on my iPod. I have over 19,000 songs to choose from and I’ve selected the 11 from his upcoming album Commitment and Change.
I’m on my second or third run through the album today after twice listening to it last night, and some favorite songs are beginning to emerge.
This is all subject [...]

It started quite by accident, but I rediscovered Tom Petty’s 1999 album Echo earlier this week and after getting a little discussion with a couple readers thought it might be fun to revisit a few more songs from that record.
I tried finding the review of Echo I wrote for my campus newspaper when the album [...]

It’s that time of year again. No, not the anniversary of Elliott’s passing (that’s next month). I mean my birthday. It’s rapidly approaching. I don’t usually think too much about it because I neither look forward to it nor do I dread it. The way I see it any calendar day you choose is 365 [...]

I was about to listen to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Walls” yesterday when I stumbled across another old favorite.
Tom Petty’s “Last Action Hero” is a hard livin’, hard luck woman who’s going down “Swingin’.” We’re not sure what our heroine is fleeing, but she’s making a run for it. She’s fleeing unknown circumstances, but [...]

Reading the news about the upcoming Colplay record had the expected effect: I’ve gone back and started listening to those first three records. X&Y must have sucked more than I thought because it killed any desire I had to listen to these records anymore, and that’s a shame. Okay, so it’s not [...]
