It never makes the countdowns, but I have to ask: how many love songs are better than Dire Straits’ “Romeo & Juliet?” It’s actually fittingly symbolic that this song floats ever so slightly beneath the radar, because that’s Mark Knopfler. The guy’s fuckin’ great, but doesn’t quite get the acclaim he deserves.
His albums always get [...]

11 suggested yesterday that every working man and woman should begin each day by singing the chorus to “Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat.” I laughed.
I think I have a better one, or one that’s just as good:

Nothing is hitting me this morning. I want to listen to Dylan and Oasis, but I can’t listen to them without thinking about how I’m supposed to be reviewing them and I have no time for that right now. I’m delaying that until (I hope) tonight when I’m pretty sure I’ll have time to get [...]

Short attention span. Tunnel vision. Lack of imagination. Obsession. All of the above. I realized that, despite having bought nine CDs this week I’ve actually spent most of the week listening to two fucking songs: “Why Can’t You Be?” by Shelby Lynne and “Prairie Wedding” by Mark Knopfler. I’m all about value. I [...]

How to say nothing in an hour or less… that’s the subtitle for last night’s B-Sides Concept Album. Well, that and $29.99. I blathered on for an hour managing to reference several topics without actually saying anything. 11 joined the program from his death bed and managed to steal the show. It’s not the first [...]

I don’t know why I haven’t thought of this before, mostly because that’s an impossible question to answer. I’m not a master logician, but I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to know why you didn’t think of something before you thought of it. I love starting my posts way out here and then somehow finding a [...]

As I was breezing through my Knopfler collection yesterday, I was reminded that he played “Romeo & Juliet” on the Real Live Roadrunning live album he did with the great Emmylou Harris in support of their All The Roadrunning album. That live album being less than two years old, I had a feeling [...]

For those of you keeping score at home, this is BC’er #4 who is getting public praise on these Fanboy pages. We tipped our cap to Sir Saleski for his guidance through my quest for vinyl. We thanked A.L. Harper for The Bittersweets. We praised El Bicho for Back Door Slam. Now we heap hosannas [...]

I can read books more than once and I can damn sure watch a movie or a TV show more than once, but it is rare I’ll read or watch something a first time if I already know how it ends. The thrill of the initial discovery, the discovery of territory not yet discovered, [...]

Community. It has its good points then, doesn’t it? I’ve received e-mails from a few of my loyal cadre of readers wondering about last night’s Knopfler show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and it got me to thinking about a lot of what was mostly good from last night. Did you [...]
