Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!
After a week of obsessive Counting Crows listening, I moved on to R.E.M., Radiohead, and The Byrds. I even mixed in some Semisonic yesterday and introduced TheWifeToWhomI’mMarried to the cool that is The Raconteurs’ “Consolers of the Lonely.” I thought I was [...]

We’ll call today “Revenge of the Rickenbacker!” After spending the morning listening to R.E.M.’s Reckoning and a few other classics from their IRS years, I was craving more Rickenbacker rock. I was consumed with a desire to hear some of those bands that made that jangling, chiming guitar sound famous. To my [...]

It was classic rock day on my iPod yesterday, at least while I was at work. Aerosmith, Bowie, Flying Burrito Brothers, Pink Floyd, The Eagles… it was just like any typical day on any typical classic rock station. Well, the bands fit that bill but not every song would be an obvious choice. [...]

It was a random day all around. Many weird songs, songs I wouldn’t have otherwise sought out to listen to but iPod served them up for me. If only I could get my iPod to bring me a cold Vanilla Coke…

I haven’t been able to get into the flow of listening to a particular album or artist from beginning to end today, so I’ve been letting my iPod play DJ for me. I’ve set up a series of “Smart Playlists” (that’s Apple’s term for them, not mine) that rotate songs based on different parameters [...]

I tried learning guitar in college, never got very far with it. I’m sure if I’d tried longer than 20 minutes I could have learned to do something with it. I probably could have learned how to play a Muddy Waters tune if I’d dedicated and applied myself. I could have learned [...]

I love the sound of a Rickenbacker in the morning…
I wonder if Fables of the Reconstruction inspired my need for The Byrds this morning. Peter Buck favored the jingle-jangle ringing of Rickenbacker’s in the early days of R.E.M., and The Byrds were pioneers of that sound.
It’s amazing how full a song can sound in [...]

There is so much negativity, so much bad news in the world that it’s really invigorating when you go digging through your music collection to find a song to celebrate something profoundly positive.
On May 17, 1954, the United States Supreme Court helped remove the nation’s collective head from its enormous collective ass, striking down segregation [...]

I’m going to compile a playlist, probably more than one, called “When It All Goes Wrong.” When I do, you can bet Mark Lanegan and Elliott Smith will make the list. So, yeah, I suppose you could translate their presence on the list to mean today was not the greatest day in the [...]

I’m sure something interesting was released today, but I don’t know what it was. What I do know is I received two packages today- two packages containing the three CDs I ordered last week.
So far, I have listened to the two Tuatara releases and am halfway through The Byrds’ Fifth Dimension. I really [...]
